A FREE GUIDE FOR A NIGHT OUTSIDE
You came for the desert.
Stay for the sky.
No telescope? Good. Start with your eyes, a comfortable seat and a little curiosity.
1. Check the night you actually have.
Use your city and state or US ZIP code to research nearby places and the current forecast. The planner shows calculated sky timing alongside forecast information; it cannot guarantee clear skies or approve a destination.

A bright Moon can be a great target. A faint-star or Milky Way outing usually benefits from a darker sky and less moonlight. Neither choice requires buying a telescope.

3. Confirm where you can be.
Check the land manager’s current rules, closures, hours and parking guidance before leaving. Ask your host about their own property rules. Planner results are research leads, not permission to enter, park or stay overnight.

4. Bring the unglamorous stuff.
Warm layers, water, closed-toed shoes, a charged phone and a light. Use a dim red light around other observers. Know your return plan; skip the drive if you’re tired or conditions don’t work.
